Store Manager

Glad Day Bookshop is the oldest LGBTQ bookstore in the world.  We are seeking an individual who meets challenges with a creative mind, practical skills and a fierce heart – someone who can balance imagination and concrete results.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
$42,000-$46,000 per year, based on experience

3 weeks paid vacation

WORKFLOW
This is a full-time, salaried position. The work is broken up into roughly: 40% scheduled shifts, selling books to customers, 40% scheduled administrative work at the worksite, 20% administrative tasks that can be done from home or at the worksite.
If the best candidate would like a 4/5 or 9/10 prorated workload, that can be discussed.

POSITION OBJECTIVES

Sales

  • Increase revenues and profitability

  • Actively market and merchandise to meet sales targets

  • Create positive relationships with vendors and suppliers

  • Foster positive, professional relationships with institutional buyers

  • Manage online sales including inventory, shipping, etc.

  • Track revenues and expenditures and provide reports as required

  • Improve daily processes and systems to maximize profitability

  • Maintain the bookstore portion of the website

  • Work to ensure fiscal stability and longevity of the business

 

Direction

  • Provide the highest level of customer service to the public

  • Procure and replenish the most robust selection of queer books and media in Toronto

  • Know what’s current in LGBTQ print and media, and respond to trends and market demands      

  • Embrace new technological opportunities as they become available

  • Develop positive relationships with queer authors/artists and organizations

  • Foster a sex-positive, anti-racist and anti-oppressive environment

  • Support other revenue streams and parts of the organization as required

  • Other duties as assigned

 

People

  • Recruit, develop and sustain a small team capable of doing the work

  • Hire, train, and manage the performance of part-time employees

  • Support a small number of skilled volunteers

  • Support the work of the merchandise coordinator 

  • Work with the events coordinator to support successful book launches and literary events

  • Work with the staff team to maximize use of social media

  • Work with the staff team to facilitate special projects & events

  • Work with the staff team to meet organizational priorities

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of LGBTQ literature

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English

  • Understanding and connection to the LGBTQ community

  • Experience working within an organizational budget


The ideal candidate should have:

  • Retail management experience or related experience that prioritizes multi-tasking, delegation and flexibility

  • Experience in book retail, or another facet of the book industry

  • Experience working in a team environment

  • Professional or volunteer experience within the LGBTQ community

  • Skill with Google Word Docs, Spreadsheets

  • Familiarity with internet applications including social media and database-driven applications

  • Understanding and experience working within anti-oppression and anti-racism frameworks
